在中国一些人们觉得英格兰就是英国队，那可是很大的错误。英国有四个足协分别是英格兰、苏格兰、威尔士、北爱尔兰，每个足协都有他们的代表队，却没有一支正式“英国队”，因此过去几十年来也一直没有“英国队”参加过奥运会。由于奥运会再一次来到英国也就例外地临时建立一支“英国队”参加奥运会，英国四个足协的球员都有机会加入英国足球队，因此吉格斯是完全有资格代表英国队。

另外，按过去的做法是，这支“英国队”只参加本届奥运会，奥运过后就解散，不会有英国足球队了。也就是说只有奥运会在英国举行，否则不会有英国足球队的出现。。
